L’ofici de pescador dóna un vigorós coratge! Tenim com herència els béns de les aigües. No excavem tresors, no llaurem els camps; fem la collita a les xarxes, pesquem el nostre or. Aixequem les bertroles al llarg del canyís i parem a les rescloses per triar la calada. Salzes daurats fan ombra al teulat molsós; dormim damunt estores a la fresca estança. Amb coralls vermells, el mirall i la paret resplendeixen, el paviment de les sales està cobert de sorra argentada. El petit jardí al costat verdeja rural, tancat al voltant amb estaques creuades lligades amb líber. Al rostre dels marrecs rialleja un esperit alegre; ells surten de la cambra a trenc d’alba; es capbussen i neden en el llac glaçat i descalços s’enfilen per les roques plenes de neu. Les filles es diverteixen al vespre a costat del llum, quan tots entrellacen les xarxes i les malles. Sovint amb rialles es passa revista al poble; la mare que vetlla atia la torba capcinejant. Sovint remem lluny en la barca que balandreja; aleshores les estrelles cordials brillen per a nosaltres; la lluna des de les alçàries, la lluna des del rierol, encara que fugim de pressa, s’esquitlla darrere nostre. Desafiem els temporals, la foscúria ens amenaça, quan les sàssoles de desguàs poden a penes deturar la mort. Desafiem també les onades que colpegen la nau que grinyola, l’arrosseguen a la fondària i la llancen contra els esculls! El Senyor que en les tempestes llampega a mitjanit, ens pot protegir i sap ben bé el que ens cal. Tantost dessota les ales de l’eternitat reposa el tossal herbós del sepulcre, la tomba dins les aigües.
