Da horch nun ungestört, mein Herz, Da horch den leisen Klängen, Die, wie von fern, zu Wonn' und Schmerz Sich dir entgegen drängen. Sie drängen sich so wunderbar, Sie regen all mein Sehnen. O sag mir, Ahndung, bist du wahr? Bist du ein eitles Wähnen? Wird einst mein Aug' in heller Lust, Wie jetzt in Thränen, lächeln? Wird einst die oft empörte Brust Mir sel'ge Ruh umfächeln? Und rief' auch die Vernunft mir zu: Du mußt der Ahndung zürnen, Es wohnt entzückte Seelenruh Nur über den Gestirnen; Doch könnt' ich nicht die Schmeichlerin Aus meinem Busen jagen: Oft hat sie meinen irren Sinn Gestärkt empor getragen. Més enllà, esguard meu, ves més enllà vers la vall! Allà rau encara la plenitud de la vida; delecta’t allà en la llum de la lluna i en la sagrada pau. Escolta, cor meu, allà sense destorbs, escolta allà els sons suaus que, com des de lluny, per al goig i el dolor premen al teu devers. Premen tan meravellosament i desvetllen tots els meus anhels. Oh digues-me, pressentiment, ets real? O ets una mera il•lusió? Algun dia somriuran els meus ulls en ple goig, com ara estan plens de llàgrimes? El meu cor, tan sovint indignat, serà algun dia ventallat per una sacre pau? Quan el pressentiment i el record s’uneixen davant el nostre esguard, llavors, al capvespre, s’alleugen les ombres més profundes de l’ànima. Ai, si no poguéssim entreteixir els somnis amb la realitat, que pobre de color, esclat i llum seria aleshores la vida humana! Així el cor espera fidel i perseverant fins a la tomba; amb amor abraça el present i es creu ric de béns, els béns que ell mateix s’ha creat i que cap fatalitat li pot prendre: viu i es mou en l’escalf i la força, mitjançant la confiança i la fe. I encara que en la nit i la boira tot al seu entorn estigui mort, aquest cor s’ha guanyat de bon tros un escut per a qualsevol combat. Amb gran obstinació en l’adversitat suporta el que li ha estat assignat. I així m’adormo, i així em desperto, si no en el goig, però de segur en la pau.
