In deine Reimart hoff ich mich zu finden,
Das Wiederholen soll mir auch gefallen,
Erst werd ich Sinn, sodann auch Worte finden;
Zum zweitenmal soll mir kein Klang erschallen,
Er müßte denn besondern Sinn begründen,
Wie du's vermagst, Begünstigter vor allen!

Denn wie ein Funke fähig, zu entzünden
Die Kaiserstadt, wenn Flammen grimmig wallen,
Sich winderzeugend glühn von eignen Winden,
Er, schon erloschen, schwand zu Sternenhallen:
So schlang's von dir sich fort mit ew'gen Gluten,
Ein deutsches Herz von frischem zu ermuten.

Zugemeßne Rhythmen reizen freilich,
Das Talent erfreut sich wohl darin,
Doch wie schnelle widern sie abscheulich,
Hohle Masken ohne Blut und Sinn.
Selbst der Geist erscheint sich nicht erfreulich,
Wenn er nicht, auf neue Form bedacht,
Jener toten Form ein Ende macht.

Wel, in jouw rijmstijl hoop ik mij te vinden,
En de herhaling moet mij ook bevallen.
Eerst zal ik zin, daarna ook woorden vinden;
Een tweede keer moet mij geen klank toeschallen,
Of mij moet een speciale zin verblinden,
Jij kunt dat wel, begaafde boven allen!

Want als een vonk, in staat om te belagen
De keizerstad, als vlammen woedend loeien
En zelve windverwekkend ‘t vuur aanjagen.
Hij, uitgedoofd reeds, week in sterrengloeien:
Zo sprong van jou dat vuur met eeuw’ge tongen,
Om een Duits hart met daadkracht te verjongen.

Afgemeten ritmes zijn behaaglijk,
Het talent vindt groot plezier daarin,
Maar hoe spoedig zijn ze onverdraaglijk,
Holle maskers zonder bloed en zin.
Zelfs de geest wordt gemelijk en klaaglijk,
Als hij niet, door nieuwe vorm geraakt,
Aan die doodse vorm een einde maakt.
