 Qui un dous lut fait encore meilleur ?
 Quel naturel est le plus amiable ?

Ie ne voudrois le dire assurément,
 Ayant Amour forcé mon iugement :
 Mais ie say bien & de tant ie m'assure.

Que tout le beau que l'on pourroit choisir.
 Et que tout l'art qui ayde la Nature,

Wie muß der Mann sein, Farbe, Haar und Wuchs,
damit er ganz gefalle? Welche Blicke
begegnen nirgends eines Widerspruchs?
Wer fügt die Wunden zu, die die Geschicke
 
nicht heilen können? Welches Lied allein
hat alle Macht der Welt? Wer kommt am weitesten,
wenn er ihn singt, in seinen Schmerz hinein?
Und was für Dinge sind es, die uns reizten?
 
Ich bin entscheidend nicht in solchen Sachen,
die Liebe hat mein Urteil in der Hand.
Ich weiß nur eins: der schönste Gegenstand
 
und alle Kunst, die die Natur erhöhte,
vermöchten nimmer, wenn man sie mir böte,
mir meine Sehnsucht sehnender zu machen.
