In Schnee und Eis, in kalter Nacht
ein Grenadier steht auf der Wacht;
scharf geht der Wind, sein Stand ist hart,
sein Herzblut stockt, sein Puls erstarrt.

Fern Glockenschlag erst halb vorbei:
Da knarrt's im Schnee, es kommt herbei.
"Wer da? Parole?" "Morgenrot!"
Der ihn ablöst, es war der Tod.
