by Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847 - 1885)
Translation by Otto Hauser (1876 - 1944)

Polka
Language: Danish (Dansk)
Cendrée og lille,
Frisk og fin
Som nys udsprungne Blade,
Med Øjne milde,
Let Carmin
Paa Kindens hvalte Flade.

I Haaret Roser,
Gyldent Tant
Om Hals og hvide Arme,
I Barm Mimoser,
Dragtens Kant
Med Dun af Svanebarme.

Og selve Roben:
Formen ny,
Et Stof med Striber blanke,
Som støbt foroven,
Men en Sky
Fra Bæltets gyldne Skranke.

I dybe Tanker --
Saadan staar
Hun lænet op mod Karmen,
Og Hjærtet banker,
Pulsen slaar,
Uroligt bølger Barmen.

Og Vinden hviner,
Regn og Slud
Slaar haardt mod dugget Rude.
Med spændte Miner
Ser hun ud.
Hvad søger hun derude?

«Ak! de charmante
Blomster vist
Vil visne, før jeg danser.
Der er den, Tante,
Hør! Jo vist --
Jo, det er her, den standser.»

Polka
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Danish (Dansk)
Cendrée und klein und
Zart und frisch
Wie Knospen, die kaum sprangen,
Der Blick so rein und
Träumerisch,
Karminhauch auf den Wangen.

Um Arm und Hälschen
Goldnen Tand
Und in dem Haare Rosen,
Ein Schwanenpelzchen
Rings als Rand
und an der Brust Mimosen.

Das Kleid von Schnitte
Neu und reich,
Ein Stoff mit hellen Streifen,
Glatt bis zur Mitte,
Wolkengleich
Vom goldnen Gürtelreifen.

Am Fenster lehnt sie,
Wogend geht
Die Brust, die Pulse schlagen,
So sinnt und sehnt sie,
Steht und späht
Und fühlt ihr Herzchen schlagen.

Die Winde wehen,
Regen fegt
An die betauten Scheiben.
Was macht sie spähen
So bewegt?
Was sucht sie in dem Treiben?

„Ach, der charmante
Ballstrauß da
Wird, eh wer kommt, [vergehen]1! ...
Da ist er, Tante!
Sicher, -- ja!
Ja, hier, hier bleibt er stehen!"
