from Volkslieder (Folksongs)
Translation by Yakiv Fedorovych Golovatsky (1814 - 1888)

Oj sumna, sumna, temna ničen'ka
Language: Ukrainian (Українська)  after the Serbian (Српски)
Oj sumna, sumna, temna ničen'ka,
A šče sumniše moje serden'ko.
Žurjusja, tužu, nikomu skazaty,
Nemaje nen'ky žal' rozvažaty.
Ni v mene nen'ky, ščob prytulyty,
Ni v mene sestry, ščob potužyty.
Odyn mylen'kyj i toj dalečen'kyj.
Zaky pryïde pivnič mynaje,
Zaky prybude pivni spivajut'.
Raz pociluje stane svitaty,
Čas vže, mylen'ka, domiv vertaty,
Čas vže vertaty.
