Mars voit Venus : Mercure auentureus
De Ciel en Ciel, de lieu en lieu se glasse :
Et Iupiter remarque en mainte place
Ses premiers ans plus gays & chaleureus.
Voilà du Ciel la puissante harmonie,
Qui les esprits diuins ensemble lie :
Mais s'ils auoient ce qu'ils ayment lointein.
Leur harmonie & ordre irreuocable
Se tournerait en erreur variable,
Et comme moy trauailleroient en vain.

your partner’s face and gaze upon her charms!
and you, fair Moon, in young Endymion’s arms,
how often you taste the sweets of ecstasy!
Mars sees Venus; adventurous Mercury
ranges with icy wings across the sky;
and lusty Jupiter can cast his eye
on all his scenes of past adultery.
That is the harmony that reigns above,
linking the immortals in a web of love.
But if what they adore was far from sight,
then the harmonious order they maintain
would change to error and chaotic night,
and they would strive - as I do now - in vain.
