Song of the Gentle Mystery

Faithful heart that you see
For such a sweet painful wound,
Guard your goodness, just like a nest
hidden in the cypress.

Quietly fluff up your nest,
And if you allow yourself to sing,
No one will ever know
Where, concealed, you sing.

Translator's note: The poet uses the German word “Lied” to indicate the type of song text used for concert presentation of classical art song, rather than a folksong text.
