Skyggen er sval og min hersker sover,
bærende sin koniske silkehette,
med sin lange gule nese i sitt hvite skjegg.
Men jeg, jeg er våken fremdeles,
og lytter utenfor
til en fløytes sang hvor det strømmer
vekselvis tristhet og glede.
En melodi både lengselsfull og frivol,
som min kjæreste spiller,
Og når jeg går nærmere vinduet,
er det som om enhver tone
spilt av fløyten svever til mine kinn
som et hemmelighetsfullt kyss.
