Mou celou duší zádumně
Language: Czech (Čeština)
Our translations:  ENG
Mou celou duší zádumně
Bolestné dchnutí táhne,
A když i radosť v srdci vře:
Hned žalů mráz v ně sáhne.

A vše, co drahé, odpadlo
Tož s mého srdce stromu,
Jen Ty's mi zůstal, národe,
A Tvoje strasti k tomu.

Tvým celým dlouhým životem
Se táhne utrpení,
Ve věčném boji zoufalém
Tvé osudy se mění.

Já k Tobě přilnul. Nad Tebe
Mi dražšího nic není:
Vždyť oba velkou žertvou jsme
Věčného utrpení!...

About the headline (FAQ)

Confirmed with Cypřiše. Sbírka básní lyrických a epických od Gustava Pflegera (Moravského), V Praze (Prague) : Nákladem knihkupectvi: I. L. Kober, 1862, page 69. Note: in stanza 2, line 2, the website antonin-dvorak.cz shows "Od" instead of "Tož s"; and in stanza 4, line 4, it shows "ujařmení" instead of "utrpení". The Bärenreiter edition (2003) of Dvořák's setting follows the Pfleger-Moravský edition for these.

An aching sigh so wistfully
Language: English  after the Czech (Čeština)
An aching sigh so wistfully
my whole inner soul pervades
that even when my heart feels joy
chilling woe at once invades.

All that’s dear to me is now gone,
fallen from that tree, my heart;
you alone, my homeland, remain,
and your sufferings to boot.

Through all the long years of your life
you never ceased suffering,
you faced eternal hopeless strife,
your fates were always changing.

To you I am deeply attached;
to me nothing is dearer;
we both are great victims of fate,
and suffering for ever!
