by Hafis (c1327 - 1390)
Translation by Georg Friedrich Daumer (1800 - 1875)

Mein Gedanke, fromm erglühend
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Persian (Farsi)
Mein Gedanke, fromm erglühend,
Macht sich auf im Pilgerkleide,
Übet eine heil'ge Pflicht.
Hin zu seinem Mekka ziehend
Wallet er die wüste Weite;
Hin zu seiner Kaba fliehend
Dürstet er nach Heil und Licht.
Und wo sind sie, diese Horte,
Diese hehren Gnadenorte? --
Mekka winkt, wo deine Pforte,
Kaba ist dein Angesicht.

About the headline (FAQ)

Confirmed with Hafis. Neue Sammlung. Von G. F. Daumer, Verlag von Bauer & Raspe in Nürnberg, 1852, page 27. Note: in many older editions, the spelling of the capitalized word "übet" becomes "Uebet", but this is often due to the printing process and not to rules of orthography; since the lower-case version is not "übet", we use "Übet".
