Zu dir, du einzig Teure, dringt mein Schrei
Aus tiefster Schlucht, darin mein Herz gefallen.
Dort ist die Gegend tot, die luft wie Blei.
Und in dem Finstern fluch und schrecken wallen.

Sechs Monde steht die Sonne ohne warm.
In sechsen lagert das Dunkel auf der Erde.
Sogar nicht das Polarland ist so arm.
Nicht einmal Bach und Baum noch Feld noch Herde.

Erreicht doch keine schreckgeburt des Hirnes
Das kalte Grausen dieses Eis-Gestirnes
Und dieser nacht o ein Chaos riesengross !

Ich neide des gemeinsten Tieres los
Das tauchen kann in stumpfen Schlafes Schwindel...
So langsam rollt sich ab der Zeiten Spindel!

Cap a tu, única estimada, arriba el meu crit
des de la més profunda gorja, on ha caigut el meu cor.
Allà l'entorn és mort, l'aire com plomís.
I en la foscor broten la maledicció i l'espant.

Sis mesos està el sol sense calor.
En el sisè la foscor reposa en la terra.
Ni tan sols les terres polars són tan pobres,
Cap rierol ni arbre, ni camp ni ramat.

Però el cervell no assoleix cap inici de por
pel fret espant d'aquest astre de gel,
i aquesta nit, oh, quin caos gegantí

Envejo les bèsties més vulgars lliures
[...]
de tant lent que es descabdella el fus dels temps.
