Nun liegt die Welt, die halbe
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Nun liegt die Welt, die halbe,
In Träume still versenkt,
Leis zwitschernd nur die Schwalbe,
Im Nest, des Gatten denkt.
Nachtthau die Blumen feuchtet
Die vor den Fenstern stehn,
Die Straßen monderleuchtet,
Drin Niemand mehr zu sehn!
Der Schmerz, der Wangen bleichet,
Entschlief selbst im Gemach,
Die Liebe nur, die schleichet
Um Liebchens Thür, ist wach.
Und nur der Nachtwind gaukelt
Noch um der Blumen Saum,
Doch Deine Seele schaukelt
Ein lichter, schöner Traum.
Man sagt, daß Engel gehen
Jetzt durch die Fluren lind;
Schlaf sanft, auf Wiedersehen
Am nächsten Morgen, Kind.

Sleep softly
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Now the world, half of it, lies
Quietly submerged in dreams,
Only the swallow in her nest,
Quietly twittering, thinks of her spouse.
Night-dew dampens the flowers
That grow in front of the windows,
On the streets, flooded with moonlight,
No one is to be seen any longer!
Even pain, which pales one's cheeks,
Has fallen asleep in the chamber,
Only love is still prowling wakefully
Around the beloved's door.
And only the night-wind flutters
Along the margin of flowers,
But your soul is rocked
By a bright, beautiful dream.
They say that angels now
Walk gently through the meadows;
Sleep softly, farewell until
The coming morning, child.
