Sie schaut nach der sinkenden Sonne 
Und Thränen umfloren den Blick; 
Sie denkt an die schuldlose Jugend, 
An wonnige Tage zurück. 

Sie träumt von ihm, der sie liebte, 
Sie ringt nach verlorener Ruh --
Ein schwerer, düsterer Schleier 
Deckt ihre Vergangenheit zu. 

Großmutter, die fromme, sie faltet 
Andächtig die zitternden Hände, 
Und flüstert mit bebender Lippe: 
„Verleih uns ein seliges Ende!”
