  In the beech grove in the green night
Lies the derelict water-mill,
Only magical flowers bloom gently there
In the [clear]1 midday humidity.

  The water plunges into the wheel,
Rushes off in the forest coolness,
It rushes day in and rushes day out --
But the mill lies silent.

  The solitary linden tree in front of the door
Gazes inquiringly through the windowpanes,
But no maiden steps forth
To the well under the yews.

  Only in the quiet night there is a gentle singing
There in the forest coolness.
It the morning it has been dissipated by the wind,
And the mill lies there all alone.
