La jeune esclave
Language: French (Français)
Our translations:  ENG
Jamais voyez-vous la colombe
Livrer ses petits au vautour ?
Si du nid le plus faible tombe,
Elle vole et pleure à l'entour ;
Jamais vers sa tendre couvée
Elle n'a guidé le chasseur ;
Jamais elle ne s'est privée
De leurs baisers pleins de douceur.

Et moi je connais une mère
Cruelle à son plus jeune enfant ;
Ciel ! étouffez ma plainte amère !
Croyez mon cœur qui la défend ;
Sur sa vieillesse douloureuse
Un remords sera suspendu :
N'est-elle pas plus malheureuse
Que son enfant qu'elle a vendu !

Dieu ! rejetez-moi sur la plage
Où j'errais libre avec mes sœurs,
Où le palmier qui dit mon âge
Leur donne en ce moment ses fleurs !
Le luxe affreux qui m'environne
Me rend mes déserts plus touchans ;
Je ne veux pas d'autre couronne
Que celle qui croît dans nos champs.

The Slave Girl
Language: English  after the French (Français)
Do you ever see the dove
Deliver her young to the vulture?
If the weakest falls from the nest
She flies around it crying;
Never to her tender brood
Has she led the hunter;
Never has she deprived herself
Of their kisses full of sweetness.

And as for me, I know a mother
Cruel to her youngest child;
Heaven! stifle my bitter lament!
Believe my heart that defends her;
Over her painful old age
There will hang a regret:
Is she not more unfortunate
Than the child that she sold!

God! cast me back upon the shore
Where I wandered free with my sisters,
Where the palm tree that tells my age
Even now gives them its flowers!
The dreadful luxury that surrounds me
Makes my wild lands more appealing;
I wish for no other crown
Than the one that grows in our fields.
