Schreiberlein, das tritt herfür
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Schreiberlein, das tritt herfür
  Aus Kanzleienpforten;
Wie ein Kaiser schreitend stolz;
  Gold des Hütchens Borten!

In der Hand das Tintenfaß,
  Hinter'm Ohr die Feder:
Daß ich seinen Namen schreib'
  In mein Herzchen, fleht er.

"Wärst ein Jüngling, Schreiberlein,
  Wie ich Mägdlein eben:
Wollte dann mein Kränzchen Dir,
  Wollt's vielleicht Dir geben!

Lustig hüpft der grüne Kranz
  Noch auf meinem Köpfchen;
Deiner hängt an einer Wieg' --
  Hängt voll Thränentröpfchen!"

Clerk, who comes forth
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Clerk, who comes forth
  From the gates of the chancellery;
Striding as proudly as an emperor;
  The border on his hat is of gold!

In his hands an inkwell,
  Behind his ear the quill:
He is begging that I would
  Write his name in my heart.

"If you were a youth, clerk,
  As I am a girl:
I would then give my wreath to you,
  Perhaps I would give it to you!

The wreath is still bouncing
  Jauntily upon my head;
Yours is hanging by a cradle --
  Hanging full of little teardrops!"
