Liefst zou ik het groen van elke boom Afrukken, wáár ik keek, Ik zou graag met tranen ‘t groene gras Witschreien, dood’lijk bleek. Ach groen, jij kwade kleur voor mij! Wat staar je steeds mij aan, Verwaand, brutaal, vol leedvermaak, Mij, arme, witbestoven man! Liefst zou ‘k gaan liggen vóór haar deur, Al stormde en sneeuwde het fel, En zingen heel zachtjes bij dag en nacht Dat ene woordje: Vaarwel! Hoor, als in ’t woud een jachthoorn schalt, Dan piept meteen haar raam! Zij kijkt dan wel naar mij niet uit, Maar ík zie háár daar wel staan.
