Dir, o Maria gnadenvoll,
Zu dir der Glockengruß soll dringen,
Wie einst des Engels Gruß erscholl:
Ave Maria! Ave Maria!
Es sinken graue Nebel nieder,
Verschleiert liegt die weite Rund'!
Zur Andacht ruft uns alle wieder
Des Aveglöckleins Silbermund.
O Wundervolle, trag' das Flehen
Zu deines Sohnes hohem Thron,
Auf daß wir seine Gnade sehen;
Vernimm des Grußes milden Ton:
Ave Maria! Ave Maria!

Through forest, field, and meadows rings
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Through forest, field, and meadows rings
A little bell, pure and silver-bright.
The sound flows into all regions,
A heavenly pure wellspring of enchantment.
All bells shall toll
For Thee, Mary full of grace,
The bells’ greeting shall reach to Thee
As once the angel’s greeting rang out:
Ave Maria! Ave Maria!
Grey mists descend,
Everything round about lies veiled!
We are all being called once more to our devotions
By the silver mouth of the Ave-bell.
Oh, Wondrous One, carry the pleas
To the high throne of Thy Son,
So that we may see His mercy;
Perceive the greeting’s gentle tone:
Ave Maria! Ave Maria!
