Am Strande
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Am Strande steht ein Fischerhaus,
da ist mein Lieb zu Heime.
Aus sanften Äuglein blickt's hinaus
als ob es gutes träume.
Des Abends sitzt es auf dem Stein
und wenn die Wellen rauschen,
dann neigt es leis das Köpfchen fein,
will sich ein Lied erlauschen.
Ich wüßte wohl was ich dir säng'
wenn ich die Welle wäre!
Ich säng': dein Häuslein ist zu eng,
wir fahren auf dem Meere.
Wir fahren in das schöne Land
das liegt am gold'nen Rheine,
wir fahren beide Hand in Hand[,]
wir beide ganz alleine.

At the shore
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
At the shore stands a fisher-house,
My love is at home there.
With soft eyes she gazes out
As if she's dreaming of something good.
In the evening she sits upon a rock
And, when the waves are swooshing,
Then she quietly bows her delicate little head --
She wishes to catch a song [from the waves].
I well know what I would sing to you
If I were the wave!
I would sing: your house is too cramped,
We shall travel upon the sea.
We shall travel into the lovely land
That lies along the golden Rhine,
We shall travel hand in hand --
We two, all alone.
