How the heart chases after a thousand things When it is not animated by the spirit of love, And may it win laurels upon laurels, The loveliest wreath is eternally missing! [The heart] wishes to refresh itself at the chalice of joy, But every goblet is soon empty. -- When two love each other with all their hearts, They no longer have need of the world! When two walk through life united, Then their walk through life is pleasant, For each only sees to it that the other Is crowned by the richest crown of joy. Loves gives rich gifts, Makes every pain less heavy. When two love each other with all their hearts, They no longer have need of the world! Honour bestows the wreath of stars! To be sure, every star has a sparkling light, But ah, the wreath of stars, the lofty one, Oh, believe it, it does not warm you! With warm flames of life the wreath of honour Shall never refresh you! -- When two love each other with all their hearts, They no longer have need of the world!
