Wat flitsen de sterren toch fel door de nacht! 't Heeft vaak al mijn sluimer ten einde gebracht. Toch ben ik niet boos op die toortsen van licht, Zij doen slechts in stilte hun heilzame plicht. Zij dwalen, hoog boven, in eng'lenkledij, Zij loodsen de pelgrim door bos en door hei. Zij zweven, als boden van liefd' op tournee, En dragen vaak kussen ver over de zee. Zij kijken de lijder heel zacht in 't gezicht En wissen zijn tranen met zilveren licht. Zij wijzen van 't graf ons, vol troost en vertrouwd, Naar achter het blauwe met vingers van goud.
