O! nad dziewczyną rodziny całej płacze,
A nad kozakiem, och! siwy orzeł kracze.
Oboje biedni, wnętrz ności ogień pali!
Cierpieli srodze, cierpieli i skonali.

O! nad dziewczyną po siole dzwony biją,
A nad kozakiem po lesie wilki wyją.
Kości dziewczyny grób zamkna'ł poświęcony,
Kości kozaka bieleją na wsze strony.

Hörst du der Glocken dumpfe Trauerklänge?
Um einen Totenschrein drängt betend sich die Menge,
drin' ruht ein bleiches Kind, Jungfrau, im Schmuck der Jahre,
gestern noch Blume, heute schon auf der Bahre!

Weit in des Nordens eisbedeckte Flächen,
muss einem Reitersmann das müde Auge brechen;
tief unterm kalten Schnee liegt blutig er begraben
und über seinem Haupt kreisen die Steppenraben.

Die liebten sich und mussten sich doch lassen,
fern von einand' für immer mussten sie erblassen,
doch wo die Liebe wohnt, fortan zum ew'gen Leben 
sollte die Todesstund' beide zusammen geben.
