Ein Traum
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Mir träumt', ich fuhr auf weitem Meere
Mit meinem Lieb im leichtem Kahn;
Die Nacht war still, nur leise Lüfte
Fächelten lau und lind uns an.
Es schien der Mond, die Sterne blickten
Auf unser Glück; in stummer Lust
Lag ich, mein Lieb, an Deinem Herzen,
Lag mir ein Himmel in der Brust.
Da kam ein Sturm herangezogen;
Du schlangst um mich die Arme Dein;
"Wir sinken," riefst Du "laß auf immer
Selig im Tod vereinigt sein!"
Und höher thürmten sich die Wogen,
Die Windsbraut jauchzt -- es brach der Kahn;
O wär es Wahrheit, was im Traume
Uns hat die Windsbraut angethan!

A dream
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I dreamt I sailed upon a wide sea
With my love in a light barque;
The night was quiet, only gentle breezes
Wafted about us warmly and gently.
The moon shone, the stars gazed down
Upon our happiness; in mute bliss
I lay, my love, upon your heart,
A heaven lay within my breast.
Then a storm approached;
You wrapped your arms about me;
"We are sinking," you cried "let us forever
Be blissfully united in death!"
And the waves rose ever higher,
The whirlwind rejoiced -- the barque shattered;
Oh were it true, what in a dream
The whirlwind did to us!
