Die Knospen an den Zweigen, Sie haben bang geharrt; Die Vögel ihren Reigen So lang, so lang verspart. Hei! wie sie jauchzen und singen So laut nun durch die Nacht, Und froh in's Blau sich schwingen, Ist kaum der Tag erwacht! Und schöner noch wird's kommen, Und reicher noch wird's blühn, Wenn, allem Gram entnommen, Der tiefste Grund wird grün; Die Vögel jauchzen und singen Im Chore Tag und Nacht, Und uns der Mai wird bringen Des Lenzes volle Pracht!

Now it has come after all, The spring, and has been victorious! Already its scent is flowing hither Rocked by the mild west wind. The birds are rejoicing and singing, The night of the forest grows light, And every day wishes to bring Us new joy and splendour! The buds upon the branches, They have waited anxiously; The birds have postponed Their roundelay so long, so long. Ha! how they rejoice and sing So loudly now through the night, And swing themselves up into the blue When the day has barely wakened! And it shall grow more beautiful yet, And it shall blossom more richly yet, When, freed from all grief The deepest depths grow green; The birds are rejoicing and singing In chorus day and night, And May shall bring us The full splendour of springtime!
