Der den Sterngang maß mit Menschenzeichen,
Kühnen Griffes ihrer Ordnung Zahl
Baute ein in den Figurensaal,
In die Gleichniswölbung von kristallnen Reichen,
Sass, den Schlüssel auf den Demutshänden,
Er, der Magier, im Zauberschloß,
Da aus Höh und Tiefe löste los
Goldner Ton sich ab des Raumes Wänden.
Und er spürte großen Wunders Walten:
Stern und Sonn und Erde läg zerschellt,
Stückwerk bräche, nicht im Bild gehalten,
Von dem [heilgen]1 Nachhall undurchhellt
Jenes "Wortes", das ihm gab Gestalten.
Menschenmund noch tönt vom Sang der Welt.

Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
He who with human signs measured the paths of the stars,
With a bold grasp he built the multitude
Of their order into the hall of figures,
Into the parable-like arcs of crystalline realms,
Sat, the key upon his humble hands,
He, the magician, in the enchanted castle,
Where from height and depth golden tones
Detached themselves from the walls of the universe.
And he discerned the workings of great wonders:
Star and sun and earth would lie splintered,
Piecework would break, not contained in the image,
Unilluminated by the holy echo
Of that "Word" which gave him figures.
Human lips still sound from the singing of the world.
