Mit deinen sturmgepackten
Wipfeln, wie lodert so jäh die Pracht
Des Todes in deinen eiligen Takten!

Du Lied der Qual, du Lied des Leids,
Der Schauer und Todesgedanken,
Ich kenne wohl deiner heimwehkranken
Nachtweisen heimlich wilden Reiz!

Wie einst in meiner Knabenzeit
Füllst du mit dunklem Leid mein Herz.
Es ist der alte, wohlbekannte Schmerz
Von damals, ist das alte Leid,
Nur trauriger und ohne Süßigkeit.

amb les teves capçades d’arbres copsats per la tempesta,
de quina manera tant sobtada flameja l'esplendor de la mort
en les teves rabents cadències!

Tu, cançó del turment, tu, cançó del dolor,
d’estremiments i pensaments de mort,
 conec ben bé el secret i ferotge encant
de les teves nostàlgiques melodies nocturnes!

Com antany en els dies de la meva joventut,
m’omples el cor d’una ombrívola pena.
És el vell dolor, el ben conegut
d’aleshores, és el vell dolor,
només que més trist i sense dolçor.
