L’estirp dels humans té por dels déus! Ells tenen el poder a llurs mans eternes, i el poden utilitzar com els hi plagui. Doblement els ha de témer el qui ells han enaltit! Damunt cingles i núvols hi ha cadires disposades al voltant de taules d’or. Si sorgeix una disputa, els hostes són llançats, escarnits i deshonrats, a les profunditats de la nit, i esperen endebades, captivats en la foscúria, un judici just. Els déus, però, resten en llurs eterns festins a les taules d’or. Allà dalt ells avancen de muntanya en muntanya: del fons dels avencs els arriba l’hàlit dels Titans que s’afoguen, com la sentor d’un sacrifici, un núvol lleuger. Els sobirans giren llurs sagrats ulls d’estirps senceres, i eviten de veure en llur descendència, antany estimada, els trets que parlen encara dels avantpassats. Així cantaven les Parques; el proscrit escolta, de nit a la caverna, les cançons dels ancians, pensa en els seus fills i els néts i belluga el cap.
