Roar forth with a jubilant sound, Song of the German fatherland, Stream forth freely from the urgings of our hearts, Penetrate to every shore! The whole world shall hear it loudly And no power shall deter us: For the great, German fatherland May a holy fire be ignited! As our meadows, rich and beautiful, Are enlivened by the floodwaters of the river, As upon the proud peaks of the mountains The oak forest strives upward; Thus full of deeds may our life be, Thus unstoppably high may our striving Be turned toward the great German Fatherland full of strength and love! As fierily as the German wine Streams through our blood, A strong as bronze, purified of slag, Refined in the fire; Thus may enthusiasm flame through us, Thus may justice and courage stand together To be ever a refuge and a saviour For the great German fatherland! As Germany's prehistory once bloomed Full of grandeur, fame and power, As proudly as our ancestors' hearts glowed At the splendour of their realm: Thus let us lay the foundations of the future, [Let us] unite ourselves with [our] property and blood For the great German fatherland Until God has sent us freedom!
