by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926)

Wenn ich dir ernst ins Auge schaute
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wenn ich dir ernst ins Auge schaute,
klang oft dein Wort so kummerkrank,
wie eine leise Liebeslaute,
die einsam einst ein Meister baute,
als seine Seele Sehnsucht sang.

Sie lernte seither leichte Lieder
und tönte gern zu Tag und Tanz,—
da greift ein Träumer ihre Glieder:
und wie erwachend weint sie wieder
das Heimweh ihres Heimatlands.
