Da bog aus dunklem Seidenflor Mit feiner Stirn und blonden Haaren Ein schöner Frauenkopf sich vor, Den ich gesucht seit vielen Jahren. Ich schrak empor, und meine Hand Fuhr zitternd nach dem Fensterrahmen, Da hört ich im Gewühl genannt Mit lauter Stimme ihren Namen. En un viatge, acalorat i fatigat, seia en un vagó ple de gom a gom, amb un vell, ample diari obert entre les mans. El tren s’aturà. Com els altres, vagarós, vaig mirar a través del vidre, enmig del fum vaig veure passar capells, vels, davant la meva finestra. Llavors, d’un fosc sendal de seda, amb un front xamós i cabells rossos, sorgí el cap d’una dona que des feia molts anys havia cercat. Em vaig sobresaltar i les meves mans tremoloses s’adreçaren al marc de la finestra, quan, enmig de la gentada, vaig sentir que amb una veu forta, cridaven el seu nom. Llavors vaig veure, el qui per molt de temps havia odiat, avançar vers ella saludant-la fredament, amb el seu lleuger equipatge al braç, i el vaig sentir parlar fluixet amb ella. Se’n anaren. Sonà el xiulet, em vaig enfonsar al seient; una bafarada feixuga, trista, dolorosa, penetrà als meus ulls, i a fora, la ciutat s’anava perdent de vista.
