Zum Wein, zu Freunden bin ich dir entflohn,
Da mir vor deinem dunklen Auge graute,
In Liebesarmen und beim Klang der Laute
Vergaß ich dich, dein ungetreuer Sohn.

Du aber gingest mir verschwiegen nach
Und warst im Wein, den ich verzweifelt zechte,
Warst in der Schwüle meiner Liebesnächte
Und warest noch im Hohn, den ich dir sprach.

Nun kühlst du die erschöpften Glieder mir
Und hast mein Haupt in deinen Schoß genommen,
Da ich von meinen Fahrten heimgekommen:
Denn all mein Irren war ein Weg zu dir.

car tenia basarda dels teus negres ulls,
als braços de l’amor i al so del llaüt
t’he oblidat, jo, el teu fill infidel.

Però tu m’has seguit discretament
i eres en el vi que jo desesperadament bevia,
eres en el fervor de les meves nits d’amor
i fins i tot en el sarcasme amb el que et parlava.

Ara refresques els meus membres exhausts
i has posat el meu cap als teus genolls
quan dels meus viatges he tornat a casa:
car tot el meu vagarejar era un camí cap a tu.
