Da die Welt zur Ruh' gegangen,
Wacht mit Sternen mein Verlangen;
In der Kühle muß ich lauschen,
Wie die Wellen unten rauschen.

"Fernher mich die Wellen tragen,
Die ans Land so traurig schlagen,
Unter deines Fensters Gitter,
Fraue, kennst du noch den Ritter?"

Ist's doch, als ob seltsam' Stimmen
Durch die lauen Lüfte schwimmen;
Wieder hat's der Wind genommen -
Ach, mein Herz ist so beklommen!

"Drüben liegt dein Schloß verfallen,
Klagend in den öden Hallen
Aus dem Grund der Wald mich grüßte -
's war, als ob ich sterben müßte."

Alte Klänge blühend schreiten!
Wie aus lang versunknen Zeiten
Will mich Wehmut noch bescheinen,
Und ich möcht' von Herzen weinen.

"Überm Walde blitzt's [vom weiten]1,
Wo um Christi Grab sie streiten;
Dorthin will mein Schiff ich wenden,
Da wird alles, alles enden!"

Geht ein Schiff, ein Mann stand [drinne]2,
Falsche Nacht, verwirrst die Sinne,
Welt Ade! Gott woll' bewahren,
Die noch irr im Dunkeln fahren.

Alors que le monde s'en est allé se reposer
Mon attente s'éveille avec les étoiles,
Dans la fraîcheur je prête l'oreille
Au grondement des vagues en bas.

« De loin les vagues m'ont porté ici,
Elles qui si tristement frappent la terre,
Sous la grille de ta fenêtre,
Femme, connais-tu encore ce chevalier ? »

Pourtant, c'est comme si d'étranges voix
Planaient dans les airs tièdes ;
Encore une fois le vent les a dérobées,
Ah, mon cœur est si oppressé !

« Là-haut il y a ton château en ruines,
Gémissant dans les salles désolées,
À la façon dont la forêt me saluait,
C'était comme si je devais mourir. »

Des sons anciens s'élèvent, radieux ;
Comme aux temps depuis longtemps disparus
La mélancolie m'inonde encore,
Et je voudrais pleurer tout mon cœur.

Par-dessus la forêt, le lointain étincelle,
Au tombeau du Christ, là où sont les combats :
Vers là-bas je dirigerai mon bateau,
Alors tout sera fini, tout sera fini.

Un bateau va, un homme à son bord,
Fallacieuse nuit, tu nous embrouilles les sens !
Adieu, monde ! Que Dieu protège
Ces fous qui voyagent encore dans le noir !
