In Traum und Gesang
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Und die Flut und den Wald
Und den Hügel hinan
Eine süße Gewalt
   Rührt mich an.

Rührt mich an mit dem Ton,
Der mir vormals klang.
Wann hört' ich ihn schon?
   Ist’s lang?

Ist's lang? -- Ich vergaß. --
Schallt heute wie eh',
Ton, drin ich genas
   Und vergeh.

Vergeh; denn er lallt
Mir Erinnerung. --
Und bin ich’s? bin alt,
   Bin jung?

Bin jung, wie der Wald,
Wie der Berg, wie der Baum,
Wie das Wasser, das wallt
   Im Traum:

In Traum und Gesang,
Der nicht endet und ruht,
Wald, Hügel und Hang,
   Und die Flut!

In dreaming and singing
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
And up upon the waters and the woods
And the hill,
A sweet power
   Touches me.

Touches me with the tone
The sounded for me in the past.
When did I already hear it?
   Is it long ago?

Is it long ago? -- I forgot. --
It resounds today as of yore,
Tone in which I convalesced
   And in which I perish.

Perish; for it babbles
Memory for me. --
And is it I? Am I old,
   Am I young?

I am young like the woods,
Like the mountain, like the tree,
Like the water that surges
   In my dreams:

In dreams and in singing,
That does not end or rest,
Woods, hills, and slope,
   And the waters!
