Ik stichtte u lieveken, in mijn hart
Een outer onder gezangen,
Met menig zoete erinnering
Als met exvotos behangen.

Zoo glanst het in't duistre van mijn gemoed
Van licht en gloed en stralen,
Als van goud en zilver d'altaren
In de sombere kathedralen.

En duizend gedachten stijgen er 
uit het verleden als wierookwalmen,
Dan suist een half vergeten lied
In lange, treurige galmen.

Uw beeld het prijkt er, mijn liefste kind
Door zwarte sluiers verborgen;
En ik zing, voor het heiligdom
Requiem avond en morgen.

Den tausend sässe Erinnerungen
Gleich Exvotos umhängen.

So glänzt es im Düster meines Gemüts
Von Licht und Glut und Strahlen,
Als von Gold und Silber Altare
In den dunklen Kathedralen.

Wie Weihrauchgewölke schweben darum,
Gedanken aus fernen Zeiten,
Ein halbvergessenes altes Lied
Erklinget traurig von Weitem.

Dein Bild erscheint da, mein liebstes Kind,
Durch schwarze Schleier verborgen;
Und ich sing' vor dem Heiligtum
Requiem Abend und Morgen.
