Ich ruh' am Silberteich
Language: German (Deutsch)
Ich ruh' am Silberteich
Gebettet in den Rasen,
Wie drüben Zapfenstreich
Im Dorf Dragoner blasen.
Der Töne Vollgenuß
Erregt mich süß und bange,
Hell wiehert seinen Gruß
Mein Rapp' dem trauten Klange.
Nun denkst du, treues Thier,
An fliegende Standarten,
An manch ein gut Quartier
Auf unsern welschen Fahrten.
Und leise klingt ein Ruf
Uns aus entschwundnen Tagen, --
Doch morgen soll dein Huf
Zu neuem Glück mich tragen!

I rest beside the silvery pond
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I rest beside the silvery pond
Bedded in the grass,
As over yonder in the village
The dragoons are playing taps.
The full enjoyment of the tones
Moves me sweetly and anxiously,
Brightly my faithful black steed whinnies
His greeting to the familiar sound.
Now you are thinking, faithful animal,
Of fluttering standards,
Of many good quarters [that we have inhabited]
Upon our Italian journeyings.
And quietly comes a call to us
From out of vanished days, --
But tomorrow your hooves shall
Carry me to new good fortune!
