Auf einem grünen Hügel
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  CAT ENG ENG FRE
Auf einem grünen Hügel
  Da steht ein Röslein hell,
Und wenn ich roth, roth Röslein seh' --
So roth wie lauter Liebe --
  Möcht' weinen ich zur Stell'!

Auf einem grünen Hügel
  Da stehn zwei Blümlein blau,
Und wenn ich blau, blau Blümlein seh' --
So blau, wie blaue Äuglein,
  Durch Thränen ich sie schau'!

Auf einem grünen Hügel
  Da liegt ein weißer Stein,
Und drunter liegt wohl all' mein Glück
Schon manches Jahr begraben
  In einem schwarzen Schrein!

Auf einem grünen Hügel
  Da singt ein Vögelein;
Mir ist's, als säng's: Wer niemals Leid --
Recht großes Leid erfahren,
  Wird nie recht glücklich sein!

Upon a green hill
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Upon a green hill
  There grows a bright rose,
And when I see the red, red rose --
As red as pure love --
I could weep on the spot!

Upon a green hill
There grow two little blue flowers,
And when I see the blue, blue flowers --
As blue as blue eyes,
I gaze upon them through tears!

Upon a green hill
  There lies a white stone,
And under it lies all my happiness,
Already buried for many a year
  In a black shrine!

Upon a green hill
  There sings a little bird;
It seems to me as if it sings: he who has never
Experienced pain, truly great pain,
  Shall never be truly happy!
