Auf einem grünen Hügel
Da liegt ein weißer Stein,
Und drunter liegt wohl all' mein Glück
Schon manches Jahr begraben
In einem schwarzen Schrein!
Auf einem grünen Hügel
Da singt ein Vögelein;
Mir ist's, als säng's: Wer niemals Leid --
Recht großes Leid erfahren,
Wird nie recht glücklich sein!

I could weep on the spot!

There grow two little blue flowers,
And when I see the blue, blue flowers --
As blue as blue eyes,
I gaze upon them through tears!
Upon a green hill
There lies a white stone,
And under it lies all my happiness,
Already buried for many a year
In a black shrine!
Upon a green hill
There sings a little bird;
It seems to me as if it sings: he who has never
Experienced pain, truly great pain,
Shall never be truly happy!
