Ein Maientag
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Ein Maientag, so schön wie keiner war!
Die Sonne stand am Himmel, leuchtend [klar]1,
an einem Himmel, der in tiefem Blau
sich wölbte über schimmernd-grüner Au.

Die Lerchen stiegen jubelnd in die Luft;
am Gartenhang bog blühend sich der Flieder
und lachte zu den jungen Veilchen nieder;
in allen Wegen lag [der warme]2 Duft.

Das war ein Tag voll Frühlingsauferstehn . .
Herz, laß auch uns dem Lenz entgegen sehn!
Und was der Winter trüb an uns verbrach:
wir gehen nun dem neuen Frühling nach!

A day in May . .
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A day in May, as lovely as none ever was!
The sun stood in the sky, shining [clearly]1,
upon a sky that in deep blue
arched over the shimmering green meadow.

The larks rose rejoicingly into the air;
along the garden slope the lilac bowed in blossoming
and laughed down to the young violets;
in all the lanes lay [the warm]2 scent.

That was a day full of the resurrection of springtime . .
my heart, let us, too, look toward spring!
And whatever crimes winter drearily committed against us:
we now follow the new springtime!
