Sein Bündel Holz am Rücken bringt
Der Arme heimgetragen;
Der frohe Knecht die Geißel schwingt
Am erntevollen Wagen.

Die milchbeladne Herde wiegt
Sich in die trauten Ställe;
Mit Scherz und Kuß zur Dirne fliegt
Der lustige Geselle.

Von Feld und Walde pfeift nach Haus
Der Jäger dort, der rasche;
Und Has und Wachtel guckt heraus,
Zu prahlen, aus der Tasche.

Den Dichter sieht man aus der Nacht
Der Eichen selig schwanken;
Er taumelt fort mit seiner Tracht
Unsterblicher Gedanken.

Rentrée vespérale

Son fagot de bois sur le dos,
Le pauvre le porte à la maison;
Le joyeux valet balance le fléau
Sur le chariot empli de la récolte.

Les troupeaux chargés de lait chaloupent
Vers les étables accueillantes;
Badinage et baiser envoyés à la fille,
Le joyeux compagnon passe.

Venant des champs et des bois le chasseur
Sifflote et se presse vers sa maison;
Lièvre et caille dépassent
De la gibecière, comme une vantardise.

On voit le poète aux anges vaciller
Dans la nuit des chênes;
Il titube dans la multitude
De ses pensées immortelles.
