Translation Singable translation by John Bernhoff (flourished 1890-1912)

Im Kahn
Language: German (Deutsch)
Schaukelt weiter mich, ihr Wellen!
Schaukelt weiter mich, ihr Winde!

Durch die wunderbare Ruhe
dieser lichten Einsamkeit!
Leise, leise wiegt mich weiter
In die Ferne zu den stillen,
weissen Wolken, tragt mich fort.
Wohin ihr wollt!

Immer mehr versinkt die Küste
mit dem Strand und mit den Bergen,
alles wird zum blauen Glanz.
Selig lieg ich auf dem Rücken
horch auf die Ammenlieder,
die mir Wind und Wellen singen.

Falte langsam meine Hände,
schliesse lächelnd meine Augen
und verträume in den Himmel,
wie ein Kind in stiller Wiege.
Meine Mutter ist die Sonne,
und ich weiss, sie hat mich Lieb!

Schaukelt weiter mich, ihr Wellen,
schaukelt weiter mich ihr Winde!

Solitude
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Rock me onward, whisp'ring waters!
Bear me onward, lulling breezes!

Thro' the slumber breathing silence
born of nature's solitude...
Softly, softly bear me onward
toward the distance o'er the clouds
in azure roaming,
bear me on to realms unknown!

Earth and sea below me
vanish with its shores, and with its mountains,
gleaming bright as newborn star.
Lost in blissful dreams I lie here
list'ning as to songs of childhood,
songs that wind and wave are singing.

As in prayer, myhands are folded,
closed mine eyes, my lips are smiling
and I dream of Heav'n and Angels,
like an infant in its cradle.
Yon bright moon, like fondest mother,
guards my sleep with tender love!

Rock me onward, whisp'ring waters!
Bear me onward, lulling breezes!

From the Wolff score.
