i Dalens Dyb paa Bjærgenes Tind?
Løs mig den sælsomme Gaade,
luk mig i Ungdommen ind.

Lenore, mit Hjærte er sygt.
Dit er saa mægtigt, dit er saa trygt.
Lær mig jævnmodig paa Vejene træde,
lær mig at le og at græde.

Mit Hjærte er Ørken gold og bar,
saa sig du mig, du, som mit Hjærte bar,
en Kilde, der kan det væde, 
en Sol, som gør Himlen klar.
