At your side so gladly I dream away the spring night; The holy stars faithfully Keep watch before your window, While we are locked in each other's arms, Soul is immersed in soul And lips from lips drink the breath In long draughts. From treetops where birds brood, Scented May softly tosses down Its buds and blossoms Upon us blissful two, And through the arches of the windows The wind, wandering in the night, Wafts your curls in waves Gently over my head. We tremble, we grow pale For love, and for each of us surges forth The image of the other In the eyes wet with blissful tears. Ah! is the red shimmer of morning Already rising in the east? No, through the sky there blazed A nocturnal meteor. We must still entrust to each other A thousand secrets, And still kiss a thousand kisses Before the morning begins to dawn. Why do you chase away the night so early, Oh swallow, with your singing? Be quiet, be quiet! and, keep watch yet, Ye holy stars, for a long time!
