Brautgang
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG FRE
Junge Hände halfen mich schmücken,
Alte Lippen segneten mich,
Leise rieselt die bräutliche Schleppe
Über die blumengeschmückte Treppe,
Und der Schleier fällt über mich.
Flüsternd stehn die Leute zur Seite --
Was sie reden, höre ich nicht.
Brausend schwillt mir die Orgel entgegen,
Und wie ein goldener Gottessegen
Streift die Sonne mein blaß Gesicht.
Tausend fromme Wünsche im Herzen,
Heil'ge Scheu im kindlichen Sinn,
Kniee ich still an der seligen Pforte
Unsres Glücks, und des Priesters Worte
Hallen ernst durch die Kirche hin.

Bridal procession
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Young hands helped to adorn me,
Old lips blessed me,
The bridal train flutters quietly
Over the steps decorated with flowers,
And the veil falls over me.
Whispering, people stand aside --
I do not hear what they say.
With a roar the organ swells toward me,
And like a golden blessing from God
The sun glides across my pale face.
With a thousand pious wishes in my heart,
With holy dread in my child-like spirit,
I kneel silently at the blessed gateway
Of our happiness, and the words of the priest
Echo solemnly through the church.
