Junge Hände halfen mich schmücken,
Alte Lippen segneten mich,
Leise rieselt die bräutliche Schleppe
Über die blumengeschmückte Treppe,
Und der Schleier fällt über mich.

Flüsternd stehn die Leute zur Seite --
Was sie reden, höre ich nicht.
Brausend schwillt mir die Orgel entgegen,
Und wie ein goldener Gottessegen
Streift die Sonne mein blaß Gesicht.

Tausend fromme Wünsche im Herzen,
Heil'ge Scheu im kindlichen Sinn,
Kniee ich still an der seligen Pforte
Unsres Glücks, und des Priesters Worte
Hallen ernst durch die Kirche hin.

Cortège nuptial

De jeunes mains m'aidèrent à me parer,
De vieilles lèvres me bénirent,
La traîne nuptiale ruissela sans bruit
Sur les escaliers ornés de fleurs,
Et le voile tomba sur moi.

Les gens sur le côté chuchotaient --
Je n'entendais pas ce qu'ils disaient.
Le bourdonnement des orgues enflait à ma rencontre,
Et pareil à la bénédiction dorée de Dieu,
Le soleil effleura ma pâle figure.

Avec mille vœux pieux au cœur,
Une crainte sacrée dans ma tête d'enfant,
Je m'agenouillai en silence à la sainte porte
De notre bonheur, et les paroles du prêtre
Résonnèrent avec gravité dans l'église.
