Wanderlust

Sollt' ich nicht auf Wanderfüßen
Endlich mir die Welt besehn?
Winkt es nicht mit tausend Grüßen,
Wo die dunklen Berge stehn?
Wo die Tannen stehn und lauschen,
Wo im Thal die Bächlein rauschen.--
Heute geht's den Berg hinunter,
Morgen geht's den Berg hinauf,
Und dann trägt ein Schifflein munter
Mich des Stromes raschen Lauf.
Grüne Reb' am Berggelände
Fragt mich, wo ich's besser fände?
Mit den alten Giebelhäusern
Hat die Stadt sich aufgethan;
Bei der Schenke grünen Reisern
Halt' ich wohl ein wenig an.
Nun, Herr Wirth, heraus das Beste!
Hier sind kreuzfidele Gäste!

A hankering to wander
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Shall I not with wandering feet
Finally have a look at the world?
Does it not beckon with a thousand greetings
There where the dark mountains loom?
Where the firs stand and listen,
Where in the valley the brooklets are rushing.--
Today I go down the mountain,
Tomorrow I go up the mountain,
And then a little barque shall bear me merrily
Along the river’s rapid course.
The green grapevines upon the high banks
Ask me: where could I find something better?
With its old gabled houses
The town has opened to me;
By the green branches at the tavern
I shall stop for a little while.
Now, tavern-keeper, bring out your best!
Here are guests, happy as larks!
