Aus der Schiffsbank mach ich meinen Pfühl.
Endlich wird die heiße Stirne kühl!
O wie suß erkaltet mir das Herz!
O wie weich verstummen Lust und Schmerz!
Über mir des Rohres schwarzer Rauch
Wiegt und biegt sich in des Windes Hauch.
Hüben hier und drüben wieder dort
Hält das Boot an manchem kleinen Port:
Bei der Schiffslaterne kargem Schein
Steigt ein Schatten aus und niemand ein.
Nur der Steurer noch, der wacht und steht!
Nur der Wind, der mir im Haare weht!
Schmerz und Lust erleiden sanften Tod.
Einen Schlummrer trägt das dunkle Boot.

Dans le Bateau tardif

Finalement devient frais le front brûlant
Ah comme doucement devient froid mon coeur
Ah comme doucement deviennent muettes volupté et peine !
Au dessus de moi, la noire fumée du tuyau (cheminée)
Se berce et se plie dans le souffle du vent
Ici et là de nouveau 
s'arrête le nateau dans maints petits ports.
Près de la faible lumière de la lanterne
L'ombre descend et personne ne monte,
Il n'y à que le pilote qui veille et se tient debout
Seul le vent souffle dans mes cheveux
Peine et plaisir subissent une douce mort
C'est un dormeur que porte le sombre bateau.
