Der Spielmann saß am Felsen Und blickte hinunter in's Meer Und sah die Wogen sich wälzen Und fluthen um sich her. Die Zither lag zur Seite, Die Luft war rein und mild; Und wie aus ferner Weite Kam ihm manch' liebes Bild. Kam auch der Schlummer treulich, Spielt’ um das Silberhaar Und schloß so still und heilig Das müde Augenpaar. Und mit dem Kreis der Träume Kam Jugendlust herauf; Und viel zerknickte Keime Blühten lebendig auf. Und alte schöne Stunden Wurden ihm wieder neu, Als hätt' er Liebchen gefunden Und Liebchen [wär’]1 ihm treu. Da faßt' ein plötzlich Grausen Ihn wie mit Sturmesweh'n, Und Wogen hört er brausen, Sah Liebchen untergeh'n.-- Und jetzt aus seinen Traümen Der Spielmann schnell erwacht, Und sieht die Wogen schäumen Und sieht der Wellen Nacht. Und hört die Winde pfeifen Und stürmen um sich her, [Thät]2 nach der Zither greifen, Fand keine Zither mehr. Die Zither schwimmt in den Wellen, Der Sturm riß sie hinab, Und seine Thränen quellen Bei seiner Liebsten Grab. Da wird's ihm, als ob sie riefe, Als klängen die Saiten an; Und er stürzt sich hinab in die Tiefe Und bricht durch die Wellen sich Bahn. Und von Weitem sieht er sie blinken Und kämpft sich zu ihr her, Und hält sie empor, dann versinken So Zither wie Spielmann in's Meer.

El músic seia a la roca i mirant cap avall al mar veia revoltar i créixer les onades al seu entorn. La cítara era al seu costat, l’aire era pur i suau; i com des d’un espai llunyà li arribaven moltes estimades imatges. Fidelment arribà també la son, jugà amb els seus cabells argentats i silent i venerable li féu tancar el parell d’ulls fatigats. I amb el cercle dels seus somnis ressorgí el goig de la jovenesa; i moltes llavors esmicolades floriren de nou a la vida. I antigues hores esplèndides es renovaren per a ell, com si hagués retrobat la seva estimada i l’estimada li fos fidel. Llavors, se sobte, li agafà un esglai com el brufol de la tempesta, i sentí bramular les onades i veié l’estimada anar-se’n al fons. I adés, dels seus somnis el músic ràpidament es despertà, i veié les ones escumejar i veié la nit de les onades. I sentí xiular els vents i tempestejar al seu entorn, intentà agafar la cítara però no la trobà. La cítara surava en les onades, la tempesta l’arrossegava avall, i les seves llàgrimes brollaven vora la tomba de la seva estimada. Llavors li semblà que ella el cridava, com si sonessin les cordes; i ell es llançà a la fondària i s’obrí camí entre les ones. I de lluny la veié brillar i maldà per apropar-s’hi, la prengué enlaire, i aleshores s’enfonsaren tan la cítara com el músic dins del mar.
