Wandervogel
Language: German (Deutsch)
Grüßend schwenkt er seine Mütze
Übern Zaun und ruft "Ade",
Schaut zum letzen Mal herüber
Nach dem Fleck, darauf ich steh'.
Dann verhallt die frohe Stimme
Und die Ferne spinnt ihn ein,
Ihm vorauf auf allen Wegen
Fliegt der goldne Sonnenschein.
Wandervogel in der Mütze
Denkt noch nicht an Nesterbau'n,
Winkt und lacht mit Schelmenaugen
Hierhin, dorthin übern Zaun.

Migratory bird
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
He waves his hat in greeting
Over the fence and calls "Adieu",
For the last time he looks over
To the spot upon which I stand.
Then his joyful voice dies away
And the distance catches him in its web,
Ahead of him upon all his paths
The golden sunshine flies.
Migratory bird in his hat
Does not yet think of building nests,
With impish eyes he beckons and laughs
Hither and yon over the fence.
