Belles frileuses qui sont nées
Quand le soleil embrasait l'air;
Au premier souffle de l'hiver
Les roses sont étonnées...

Au lieu des tièdes matinées
Où riait l'azur frais et clair,
Pourquoi ce ciel couleur de fer ?
Pourquoi ces brèves journées ?

Courbant le front languissamment
Elles ont le pressentiment
De leur courte vie épuisée...

Un frisson passe dans leur coeur
Et je crois bien qu'à la rosée,
Elles mèlent parfois leur pleurs.

Roses of October

Beautiful shivering ones who were born
When the sun set the sky ablaze ;
At the first wind of winter
The roses are stunned...

Instead of warm mornings
When the fresh and clear skies were laughing,
Why this sky of iron colour?
Why those brief days?

Bending languidly their foreheads
They have a premonition
Of their short burned-out life...

A shiver crosses their hearts
And I believe that, with the dew,
They mix sometimes their tears.
